On Friday October 4, 2019 Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with Mauritian PM Pravind Kumar Jugnauth inaugurated the phase-I of the Metro Express in Mauritius through video-conferencing.

As per the bilateral agreement the designe and construction of this integrated light rail-based Urban Transit System will be handled by L&T, which initially will operate for 13 km from the capital city of Port Louis to Rose Hill.

Financed by the Indian government, the Mauritius Metro Express is going to feature world-class rolling stock, multiple track forms for best-in-class urban design to mitigate noise and vibration, energy-efficient traction power supply systems, advanced signaling systems, and a state-of-the art operation control centre, the statement said.

GoI has granted USD 353 million for this project. The government of India is also assisting Mauritius to construct a new Supreme Court building and e-tablets for primary school children. In 2017, the Mauritius government-appointed RITES as the supervisor of the construction project.
